Monoclonal antibodies derived from animals other than rats and mice offer unique advantages. Many protein targets relevant to signal transduction and disease are highly conserved between mice, rats and humans, and can therefore be recognized as self-antigens by a mouse or rat host, making them less immunogenic. This problem is avoided when using rabbit as a host animal. Rabbit monoclonal antibodies therefore are ideal for applications such as flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry where high specificity is critical for the prevention of false positives.
